Frequently asked questions

AI governance is the set of policies, controls, and oversight an organization uses to manage how AI tools are adopted and used, including which AI models are approved, what data can go into them, and who is accountable for the outcomes as part of wider risk management. In practice, it depends on knowing how AI is used across the business, so policies can be checked against real activity instead of assumptions.

Employees already use AI every day, often with company data, so organizations need to know which AI systems are in use and how before that use creates security, privacy, or regulatory problems. It also matters because auditors and customers ask for proof of how AI is controlled, and organizations without clear governance struggle to answer. This is what makes AI governance a core part of risk management.

AI governance is how your organization sets and manages its own rules for AI use, while AI compliance is meeting the external requirements set by regulations, standards, and customer contracts. Good governance supports AI compliance, because the policies and records you keep internally are the evidence you show auditors.

The EU AI Act and ISO/IEC 42001 address AI governance directly, and assessors working with ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 increasingly expect to see how AI use is controlled too. Privacy regulations such as GDPR also apply when personal data goes into AI tools.

NordLayer AI Scout uses a web extension and desktop sensor to capture AI activity into one searchable, time-stamped audit trail, then packages it into ready-made reports, including an EU AI Act evidence pack for AI compliance reviews. It supplies the evidence that supports audit requirements, but it doesn’t certify compliance, so your auditor still makes the final call.
